On the run up to Christmas, many phones will reduce in price. One such handset which has come down in price is the Samsung Tocco Lite on Pay As You Go.
This handset provides a basic smartphone experience, and for the price is fantastic value coming in at just £39.90- (including £10- of calling credit). This phone comes on T-Mobile, but rest assured that you can get it unlocked on-line, on eBay or at a phone shop for less than £10-.
For something a little more advance than the Tocco Lite (but still made by Samsung). Consider the Samsung Monte Slide.
The Samsung S5230, nicknamed the ‘Tocco Lite’ provides you the oppurtunity of owining or upgrading to a touchscreen handset, with many great features and all for a great price.
The s5230 has is a slim and extremely compact device, sporting a 3 inch TFT display. It is a pleasure to the fingers!
The Samsung Monte Slide comes with a 3 megapixel camera, which has some good features like smile detection, auto focus and a led flash. The camera even doubles up as a video recorder, letting you capture every moment.
Protect your Samsung i9000 phone against unnecessary scratches by getting a screen protector for it.
Reasons for getting a screen protector : –
Keeps the screen free from scratches
Ensures your phone holds its value at the end of the contract period when you might want to sell the mobile phone
Extends the life of your mobile phone
Allows the screen to stay bright underneath the protector.
One great thing about this particular deal is that it comes with two screen protectors. When one dims, peels or tears you can simply remove the expired screen protector and install a fresh one. The ones from PrePayMania will cost you just over £1 per screen protector which in my opinion is a bargain!
The Samsung Galaxy Screen Guard has been specially built for the Galaxy i9000 to cover the front of the phone.
Another popular handset released by Samsung the Wave s8500 is released with Samsung’s own operating system. The name Bada apparently means wave in Korea? Just FYI
Samsung Wave Black Review
Another popular handset released by Samsung the Wave s8500 is released with Samsung’s own operating system.
What no Android, ios or Windows phone 7?
Yes Samsung have released the Wave with Bada there in house mobile operating system. The name Bada apparently means wave in Korea? Just FYI!
Bada has a host of similarities to certain named other O/S’s to name some: –
• Calendar with built in push
• Social network integration
• Samsung Apps store
• Etc etc.
I personally don’t know what Samsung are thinking as the mobile operating systems market is very competitive at the moment and there are some excellent OS out there which Samsung are partnered with such as Android which has more user and more importantly developer support, but good luck to them! Bada is open source also so maybe some other manufacturers will take it up.
It’s a bada idea excuse the pun.
One thing I liked about the Samsung Wave:- BBC iPlayer integrated automatically which is pretty cool, I wonder if your not a licence payer if this might get you in trouble?
Much like other popular mobile OS the user interface is easy to get used to and if you have used an Android, iPhone or similar enabled device setup and configuration will be a breeze
The Samsung Wave comes in at 1180mm x 560mm x 190mm making it slightly smaller than the HTC Desire but with a smaller screen just 3.3inches compared to the Desires 3.7 inches. The phone is pocket sized when compared to other market leading phones such as the new iphone4 and Samsung Galaxy i9000 but feels like a substantial phone at the same time. The touch screen is capacitive AMOLED like the Galaxy i9000 and is particularly bright capable of displaying 16 million colours more than the human eye can distinguish between.
The Samsung Wave Black comes with a 5 megapixel camera supporting both still and video photography. Standard features include: Auto focus, Smile detection, Geo location tagging via GPS and LED Flash. Personally not a fan of LED flash, its particularly useless for night time shots, if like me you want to capture some decent night images it might be worth considering the Motorola Milestone XT720 which has a Xeon flash.
The on board media centre plays a host of video formats including MPEG4, divx and xvid covering the majority of popular formats amongst others. For those planning to use the Wave for gaming, you will be pleased to know it supports Java and the market place has a range of games available for download.
Browsing the Internet with the wave is a pleasure, much like other large touch screen phones it supports multi touch which makes zooming and other operations easy.
The Samsung Wave s8500 black supports the usual connectivity options: GPS, Bluetooth, 3g and WiFi.
In conclusion this phone is an entry level touchscreen smartphone, perhaps for those wanting to experience a Smartphone without spending too much. Samsung have plenty of apps available but you are limited because the user base and developer base is not as vast as that of Blackberry, Apple or Android platforms. Should the platform take off you can expect more rapid development.

Samsung have announced that there looking to include the Goggle Android mobile operating system on there Samsung mobile phones. Android enabled Samsung phones include the popular Samsung i9000 Galaxy S & Samsung Epic 4G amongst others.
According to there head of marketing there “prioritising the Android platform..because Android is very open and flexible”, not forgetting that Samsung are a major player in Windows phone 7 due to launch within weeks. Hopefully they will input some enthusiasm into production of Samsung phones with the Windows phone 7 operating system.
Some of the differences between Android and Windows phone 7
Android is Linux based therefore open source (Windows phone 7 is MS Windows based and proprietary)
Android has a central apps place called Android Market Windows Mobile does not.
Windows mobile 7 has more applications than Android.
For the business user: – Windows phone 7 natively adopts Microsoft Exchange. Naturally.
Android has undertaken rapid development, Windows mobile has undergone a more staggered development over many years and is therefore should be a more reliable product
Review of the new Samsung E2550 Monte Slide.
A well designed slide phone with a wide range of features for both entertainment and communications providing a great mobile experience cheaply.
The Samsung E2550 Monte Slider joins the Monte range of handsets which include Candy bar style C3200 built to the same standard but differing in style and chassis design. The E2550 has a black glossy chassis with chrome edges, navigation key and camera lens.
The main applications on the Samsung E2550 Monte Slide phone have to be the media player, camera and web browser. All of these features are easy to access through the menu and provide good content, the navigation is very usable and intuitive, and going with the slide out keypad makes the phone a compact handset that’s pocket friendly coming in at just 9.85cm x 4.85cn x 1.44 cm and weighing just 85.5grams.
The phones screen is a 2 inch TFT which boasts a colourful display, the screen is not touchscreen so you need to rely on the hardware keys for all aspects of navigation and message composition.
Below the screen are several hardware keys the standard Samsung menu navigation and calling buttons, these are easy to use and if you have owned a Samsung before this will take no time getting used to. One great feature about Samsung Slider phones is they can be used in both slide open and closed positions. Obviously if you’re composing a message you will need to open the slide. The keyboard is the usual 1-0, * # found on most smartphones, so no QWERTY keyboard. If this handset had a full QWERTY it would be pretty hard to use because of the handsets size!<<>>
This smartphone supports playback of popular media files such as Mp3, WAV as well as others, these can be used as ringtones like other smartphones a handy feature. The Samsung E2550 Monte Slider has a 1.3megapixel camera and is capable of video capture though don’t expect anything to spectacular as it is a very basic resolution camera.
The Samsung Monte Slider supports Bluetooth and has a micro USB port for data transfer and charging of the battery, its recommended to purchase with this phone a MicroSD card because the internal memory is only 12Mb with a microSD card you can store up to 8Gb of content.
The battery itself is said to last 6.5 hours talking or 400 hours on standby we used it for a whole day playing games and surfing Google and it hardly used half, I wish all modern phones used as little battery as this little mobile.
In summery the Samsung E2550 Monte Slide mobile phone is a neat slide phone, simple in design and features and at a realistic price. The compact size makes it the perfect pocket companion and with its slide featuring revealing a keypad this phone is full of compact features at a very reasonable price.
Below I’ve compiled the cheapest Samsung E2550 Monte Slide mobile phone deals around. These deals are updated daily and have been compiled by comparison of leading mobile retailers.
The difference between the 8Gb and 16Gb is simply one has higher capacity storage than the other
Wow, reviewing this phone I was totally blown away with the screen, a Super amaloid very bright, very clear and a massive 4 inches in size! The screen has a resolution of 480*800 and can display more individual colours than the human eye can perceive 16Million. The screen can be seen in direct sunlight (though some clarity is lost. The screen is very superior). The display is cold glass, the rear chassis smooth piano black with a lip at the bottom which makes it comfortable when texting. The onscreen keyboard is a QWERTY it’s fast to load and a pleasure to use. ‘Swype’ is available allowing you to glide your finger on the surface of the phone to each letter s constructing your messages without lifting your finger.
The phone itself comes in at 122.4 * 64.2 * 9.9 mm and weighs 118g. So the phone is very slim considering all the technology its packing including a 1Ghz processor, 512 Mb RAM 8Gb or 16Gb of Internal storage and a camera!
One thing I noticed about the 5.0 mega pixel camera, its got no flash! Apart from that its pretty neat all the usual bells and whistles. The video camera records in High Definition (HD) and pretty well too. Having 8 or 16Gb of internal storage is quite handy for recording HD clips, if you do happen to fill all that space the phone supports microSD up to 32Gb meaning you could potentially have 48Gb of storage.
Battery life I found was generally worse than other phones lasting around 10-12 hours with heavy use. Fine for a day at the office and charge over night though. Without heavy use it should last substantially longer.
The Samsung Galaxy i9000 features the usual connectivity: WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, USB and has full access to the Android Apps Market over 50,000 apps and counting. The Galaxy S has access to Samsung’s Market Place also (enough said about that).
Samsung have released the i9000 with social integration, much like Sony Ericssons Time Scape. This software synchronises your SMS messages, Twitter feeds and Facebook updates. Very handy, faster than Timescape too.
Lots of other websites have labelled this an ‘iPhone killer’ personally I think the majority of Apple customers are very loyal and unlikely to jump ship. In all fairness I believe this is a better product (and a darn sight cheaper!) with Android 2.2 around the corner as well offering a host of benefits including faster browsing, WiFi tethering and such the future is very bright.
All in all a brilliant phone another contender for phone of the year 2010, a brilliant display and a zippy stylish phone from Samsung. When combined with Google Android 2.2 (Froyo) a very powerful smart phone indeed.
Some recommendations if your thinking of purchasing this phone on contract
Samsung Tocco Lite is a cheap and chearful basic phone, a first touchscreen phone or for someone who is after a low cost smartphone.
The phone itself fits into the hand nicely its a good pocket sized mobile. The toccos chassis is a plastic piano black with few buttons to control the volume and navigate the onscreen menu.
The mobile phone works very well as a phone! Using the widgets and menus to call and message contacts is easy. The sound quality is crisp and clear, the microphone doesn’t need to be right against your lips to be heard either unlike some other handsets.
The 3 inch touchscreen is responsive but requires pressure unlike most other touchscreens which allow you to apply very little pressure and allow you to swipe your finger to activate widgets etc.
the Tocco lite comes with widgets and short cuts such as news, weather and music which are pretty handy for updates and getting to your favourite apps quickly. Browsing the internet is something else though. Unfortunately the phone has no WiFi or 3G connectivity meaning it relies on GSM to browse the Internet. Very poor.
The camera on this phone is 3.2 MegaPixel with no flash or LED makes taking pictures in dim light or evening very difficult. One needs a steady hand to take pictures with the camera or they will come out blurry, the photo quality is OK as long as your steady and there’s light. A good feature of the camera is that you can upload the photos to Social Network Facebook, albeit it takes a while due to no WiFi or 3G.
Samsung have given this phone a USB style headphone jack, meaning you can’t use your own headphones for listening to the media player. I found the stock headphones to be tinny and would have liked to have had the option of using my own. The media player itself is quick and plays clear audio through the loudspeaker.
Battery life for this phone is good, it lasts ages thanks mainly to the minimalist approach. WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G all consume a lot of power and on my HTC Desire the account for roughly 30% of the usage.
So if your looking for a first touch screen smart phone or just a basic smart phone this handset is for you. The display is bright and readable. It’s a good alternative to some of the low/mid range smart-phones out there. The features are all average (except the battery which is awesome). My main gripe is the connectivity by not having 3G or WiFi some of the phones selling features which use the Internet lag and are majorly let down.
